The Holtzhausen family has been in the clock trade for 36 years now. ”In the trade” can mean many things to many people but to us it signifies a life set on a course between two beacons: Customer service and Grandfather clocks for sale. These two terms are in daily conversation. There is no customer service if we don’t have grandfather clocks for sale. On the other hand we will cease having grandfather clocks for sale the day we stop answering our phones and e-mails.
The tension between the two terms is dynamic. A case in point is Herman Holtzhausen our director answering the phone on Sunday, expecting a customer’s enquiry on a grandfather clock for sale. Instead he hears a faint voice in British accent complaining about her clock stopping. The line was diverted to his cell phone and costing us money. On further enquiry he hears that she bought her grandfather clock in Ireland! Its a Howard Miller and she lost her instructions. In spite of this clock not being purchased through us he takes the frail senior citizen through the easy to follow automatic beat adjustment procedure.
I was in the office when Herman took the call and only speaking to him afterwards did I realized that he was not on the line with a friend, family member or customer. “But why”, I asked him, “did your eyes light up halfway into the conversation?” His answer: “At first I couldn’t understand why a stranger was talking to me all the way from the UK about a clock that stopped working after she had renovations done to her lounge. Surely it was clear that to her that she was incurring great cost in speaking to me all the way from the UK. I tried to understand this until it dawned on me: This Howard Miller clock had a sign on it in a clock shop in Ireland many years ago reading: Grandfather clocks for sale and today, it connected us. Isn’t that why we’re in business after all?”

Its that time of the year when we have family and friends sleeping over or we overnight at their homes. Isn’t it interesting how the clock in the lounge becomes a point of conversation in these times, not because of its sentimental value or inherent beauty… It normally starts like this: “So cousin, slept OK then?” The answer somewhat hesitant with an awkward smile: “Ok yeah, just, the grandfather clock, ah its ok, its just…it woke me at every hour..with its chimes, you know, ding dong ding dong…on nine tubular chimes” Now what do you say to this? Normally it is something like: Ah no, we’re so used to it we don’t hear it anymore!” Which begs the question why you have it chiming in the first place but as all clock owners know, the moment it doesn’t chime, you know it AND you can’t sleep!
Our suggestion at howardmiller.co.za is to please remember to utilize your clock’s automatic nighttime chime shut-off option. Customers often ask us two questions about this function:
- Do we have to activate it every time we don’t want the chimes? Answer: no, its automatic. Once you have pushed the lever up, it won’t chime from 10:00-07:00. It’ll shut itself off automatically and activate again, automatically.
- Can we change the times of shut off and activation? No, unfortunately not, it is standard.
One last point: If you haven’t used the automatic nighttime chime shut-off option in a while, it may be that your clock is in daytime when we are in nighttime. This happens when the clock is stopped or winds down when you’re on holiday for e.g. at night and started again in the daytime. One normally sets the time now without paying attention to the fact that say 09:00 on the clock’s dial indicates 21:00. Does this make sense? So if you start it now at 9 and activate your automatic nighttime chime shut-off the clock will fall silent in an hours time at 10:00 and not tonight at 22:00. The result – no chimes in the day when you’re at work so its not noticed, but tonight the clock will play its melody and your cousin is going to break it or he is going to place an ad in your local paper: “grandfatherclock for sale“.
Make it a peaceful christmas period.
